The World Golf Championships tournaments are the creation of the International Federation of PGA Tours, which was formed in 1996. The International Federation of PGA Tours' current member tours are the Asian Tour, European Tour, Japan Golf Tour, PGA TOUR, PGA Tour of Australasia and Southern Africa Tour.

Each World Golf Championships tournament is considered to be jointly sanctioned by the members of the International Federation of PGA Tours.

The World Golf Championships are a series of high-profile annual events for male professional golfers created by the International Federation of PGA Tours and are considered as the leading golf tournaments after the four Majors: The Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, The Open Championship, and PGA Championships. Thus, the WGC – HSBC Champions tournament is one of the top-nine golf tournaments in the world.

The World Golf Championships events feature players from around the world competing against one another in varied formats (match play, stroke play). A common qualification standard for the series is top players from the Official World Golf Ranking or tournament winners from tournaments on various Tours in the Federation, which ensures a strong field. The World Golf Championships were developed to enhance the competitive structure of professional golf worldwide while preserving the traditions and strengths of the individual Tours and their events. . They also provide significant exposure for the countries in which they are played (i.e., they are telecast to 231 countries around the world).

Besides WGC – HSBC Champions, the other three World Golf Championships events are WGC – Accenture Match Play Championship (played in Tucson, Arizona), WGC – CA Championship (played in Miami, Florida) , WGC – Bridgestone Invitational (played in Akron, Ohio). WGC – HSBC Champions is the only World Golf Championships event that is played outside of North America.

WGC Significance to China
In only four years since its inception, the HSBC Champions tournament, which has been held each year in Shanghai, has become known in the world of golf as “Asia’s Major” due to it originally being sanctioned by four of the world’s major tours (Asian Tour, PGA European Tour, PGA Australasian Tour, and South Africa Sunshine Tour), its large USD $5 million prize purse, and the overall strength of its player field. The popularity and reach of the event, however, has extended far beyond Asia to become a favorite of golfers and fans from around the world.

As a result of the HSBC Champions great success over the last four years, the International Federation of PGA Tours has selected the event to become one of the four World Golf Championships tournaments in 2009. As a World Golf Championships event, China’s best golfers will have the chance to compete against the best golfers in the world for a portion of the tournament’s USD $7 million in prize money. Hosting a World Golf Championships event will place China at the center of the world stage of golf and present the best Chinese golfers to the world.

China’s ability to secure the honor of hosting a World Golf Championships event in such a short amount of time is international recognition of the great strides that China has achieved in the development of the sport of golf in the 30 years since the beginning of opening and reform in 1979.

The holding of a World Golf Championships in China will help to popularize the sport of golf in China and raise the overall competitive level of Chinese golf in international competition.
